Magnesium Oxide (CCM) – An Essential Additive for Agricultural Applications

Magnesium is anvital element for plant growth, as the central core of the chlorophyll molecule in plant tissue. The Deficiency of Mg leads to chlorophyll shortage which resultls into to poor and underdeveloped plant growth. Magnesium also an key element to keep the specific enzyme systems active which boosts up plant’s metabolism.

Magnesium Oxide as Caustic Calcined Magnesia and Magnesium Carbonate as Magnesite Ore widely used as key raw materials to manufacture essential fertilizers and Magnesium Sulfates. Magnesium Oxidehas an important useas MgO powders along with Olivine Flour in NPK type fertilizers to either increase the Mg nutritional value or to neutralize excess acidity in the production process.

Magnesium Oxide for Animal Feed

Magnesium is a mineral element, which is essential nutrient for us. Magnesium has massive health benefits for human body. Lack of Magnesium in human body leads to various diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis etc. So it’s very important to provide sufficient Magnesium in daily nutrition needs.

The prime source of Mg is milk and dairy products. But many times due to lack of magnesium content in soils and plants, the animals have deficiency of magnesium intake, which eventually lead to low magnesium content dairy products. In order to solve these problems and prevent magnesium deficiency, especially in lactating and grazing cattle and sheep it is essential to include some additional amounts of magnesium in their daily feeding. Caustic Calcined Magnesia is used in Compound Feeds premixed along with other essentials as Animal and Cattle Feed. Also Fine MgO powders can be spread over fields and MgO powders can also be mixed into drinking water of animals in proportions as advised.

Enviromental Applications

Waste Water Treatment

Magnesia and Magnesium Hydroxide based slurry(Concentration: 35%-40%, 45%-50%) has been extensively used in the waster water treatment. It’s a safe operation at very low cost and does not cause secondary pollution. Also it’s easy to flow and easy to pump compared to other alkali substances.

The problem of wastewater odours in sewage network is mainly attributed to H2S evolution and less often to ammonia (depending on the pH of the wastewater). The main source of H2S is the reduction of sulphates by anaerobic bacteria. CCM 90% is used to neutralize sulfuric acid, the by-product would be magnesium sulfate which can be collected and used as Magnesium Rich Fertilizer.

Flue Gas Treatment

FlueGas Treatment mainly refers to the Flue Gas Desulfurization which is popularly known as FGD. Both CCM and Brucite has been used in this application in order to neutralize the sulfur inside the acid gas. Similar to Waste Water Treatment Application, the by-product Magnesium Sulphate can be obtained and used as fertilizer or can be discharged directly without pollution. There are no hard deposits formed in this process, unlike other similar alternate product, “Alkaline CaO” which forms Gypsum during FGD, which cause blockages and other operational troubles.
